Ryckie graduated with distinction from Norwich Medical School, where he earned both his MBBS and a Master of Clinical Education (MClinEd). He completed his Foundation Years at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and James Paget University Hospital and progressed to Core Surgical Training in Yorkshire, from 2013 to 2015, working at Pinderfields Hospital and Leeds General Infirmary where he attained MRCS.
Ryckie's academic trajectory advanced significantly in October 2015 when he was appointed as an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow and Specialty Training Registrar in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery within the Yorkshire and the Humber Deanery, serving concurrently as a Visiting Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Leeds where he earned an MSc in Health Research. Shortly afterwards, he was awarded a prestigeous NIHR Fellowship (£573,267) to research "Novel MRI for Diagnosing Traumatic Brachial Plexus Injuries" for which he was awarded his PhD, numerous prize and published several seminal scientific articles. During this prolific period, Ryckie was also recognised and chartered as a biostatastician (GradStat) with the Royal Statistical Society.
Following his doctorate, Ryckie progressed to the role of NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, a position he held from 2022 to 2026. He achieved his FRCS(Plast) in 2024, spending 2 years training exclusively in hand and peripheral nerve surgery. Ryckie's research portfolio expanded considerably during this time, securing several significant grants. Most notably, a £1.3million NIHR HTA grant for the FLARE trial on hand flexor tendon injuries, £49,628 from the NIHR i4i FAST program to improve MRI of upper limb nerves and tens-of-thousands from the AcadMedSci, BSSH and BAPRAS to improve the diagnostics of compression neuropathy.
His extensive clinical and academic progression culminated in June 2026, when he was appointed as an Honorary Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Senior Lecturer (Integrated Academic Clinical Fellow) at the University of Leeds.
